A little care through the seasons helps keep your pavers, ponds, and outdoor spaces looking their best.

Paver care

Protect the surface. Keep the joints intact.

Sweep and spot-clean

Remove leaves and dirt regularly. Start with water, a soft brush, and a cleaner approved for your pavers; test cleaners in a hidden spot first.

Check the joints

Look for missing joint sand, weeds, or loose pavers, especially after winter. Replace lost sand with a compatible product, following its installation instructions.

Inspect before sealing

Sealing is not an automatic yearly task. Check the paver and sealer manufacturer's guidance, and address drainage, stains, or settling before applying a compatible sealer.

Water feature care

Keep water moving and equipment clear.

Watch water level and flow

Check for low water, unusual pump noise, or reduced flow. Clear leaves from skimmers and pump intakes so equipment is not starved of water.

Care for filters and fish

Follow your equipment's cleaning schedule. For ponds with fish, use fish-safe products and follow the filter manufacturer's instructions to protect beneficial bacteria.

Plan for freezing weather

Winter care depends on the system. Follow the manufacturer's plan for pumps and plumbing; fish ponds need a separate winter plan for oxygen and gas exchange. Never strike pond ice to open it.

Pressure washing

A careful clean—not maximum pressure.

Start with the gentlest method

Try sweeping, a garden hose, and a suitable cleaner first. If pressure washing is appropriate for the surface, follow its manufacturer's cleaning instructions and test a small area.

Protect pavers and joints

Do not concentrate the jet on joints or use aggressive blasting. Excessive pressure can remove joint sand and damage the finish. Inspect joints after cleaning and restore sand as directed.

Keep people and ponds safe

Wear eye protection and closed-toe shoes; never aim at people, pets, or electrical equipment. Keep detergent and dirty runoff out of ponds and storm drains, and follow product labels.

A seasonal starting point for Ohio weather. Your materials, equipment, and pond inhabitants determine the exact care needed.

01 / Inspect & refresh

Spring

Check pavers for settling and missing joint sand after winter.
Clear debris and inspect drainage paths.
Inspect water feature equipment before seasonal restart.

02 / Keep up with care

Summer

Sweep patios and clean spills promptly.
Monitor pond water level, pump flow, and filters.
Use surface-approved cleaning methods as needed.

03 / Prepare for the cold

Fall

Remove fallen leaves from patios, ponds, and skimmers.
Check drainage before freezing weather.
Follow your system's winterization and fish-care plan.

04 / Protect & monitor

Winter

Use a plastic-edged shovel; avoid chipping pavers.
Follow paver guidance before using deicing products.
Monitor any operating pond aerator or de-icer as directed.
